Master Chang and the Sangrok Way.
Master Chang started learning Taekwondo at the age of ten. His Master was Lee Jong-woo, who is now vice president of Kukkiwon; the worldwide headquarters of Taekwondo. His first teaching job was while he was in the military, where he was the Korean marines’ Taekwondo instructor and member of their competition team. When he left the military Master Chang opened Sangrok gym in 1979, with the aim of spreading the practice and beliefs of Taekwondo to those outside Korea. While working to achieve that aim, Master Chang has taught Taekwondo to students from many countries. He founded Indian Taekwondo and many of his non-Korean pupils have opened their own gyms around the world.
There are Sangrok gyms in England, Norway, America, Israel, Germany, India and etc

Master Chang is 64 looks 50 and moves likes he's 30!

He is married with family, who live in the academy as well.
He speaks extremely good English and is great company.
He likes to play football after training (just try and beat him!)
and is fond of Makgeolli, a traditional Korean rice beer.

He is a great man, loved by all his students.

Why come to Korea?
Korea is the birthplace of Taekwondo. For thousands of years the Koreans have been practicing and improving their martial art. Taekwondo is a huge part of Korea's heritage and tradition, but it is also very much part of the present in Korea.

Most Koreans gain a black belt in the their teenage years, while those that did not have to earn at least a 1st Dan during their 3 years of military service. This makes Korea the home to the most Taekwondo practitioners in the world, making Seoul the beating heart of Taekwondo.

For Taekwondo students a trip to Korea is a pilgrimage to the source and flowing river of Taekwondo. The competition season in Seoul is unrivaled. Its sports universities produce the highest level of Taekwondo students in the world, and as a result, the Korean team is the best on Earth. Taekwondo is practiced and understood here in a way that many cannot rival. For Instructors who wish to compete on the international level, a trip to Korea to learn the latest training techniques is a prerequisite. For those who are serious about Taekwondo a trip to Korea is not a question of if, but of when.

In Korea Taekwondo can be seen in its original setting, as a functioning part of Korean society. The parallels between Korean culture and the philosophy of Taekwondo give a much deeper understanding of what Taekwondo really is. Taekwondo is a very traditional activity in Korea as well as being its modern national sport. In Korea it is possible to see first-hand these traditions alive today. To Koreans, Taekwondo is a lifetime commitment.

In many western countries Taekwondo is seen as just another martial art, but here in Korea the points that make Taekwondo so unique stand out, and are appreciated by all. For foreigners it is very difficult to find or learn from individuals who have dedicated their whole life to living the Taekwondo way.

In Korea the Taekowndo man takes on a different meaning from elsewhere in the world; to understand this, it needs be seen in its original environment. Here in Korea, it is possible to see the mountains and valleys that created the deepest parts of the Taekwondo philosophy, influenced the way the Poomse were developed, and are the foundation of the history of Taekwondo and the Taekwondo way.

Life in the Academy
In the academy there is accommodation in individual and/or shared rooms. There is space to relax after training with a large television and Internet access. Washing up is done by the students.

Korean style food is provided but only dinner is prepared for students. Nothing apart from
training is compulsory in Sangrok, however it is hoped that as Taekwondo students, all students will live up to morals of Taekwondo.

Dinner is after training and is a good time to learn about each other and to talk with Master Chang about martial arts, Korea, and anything else. This is also a good time for individual students to discuss any points they may want to raise about their own training.

On weekends, many students like to go out and experience the joys of Seoul life. It is recommended to follow local advice regarding where to go, as like in all fast moving cities, Seoui changes all the time. There is excellent shopping in Seoul and much to be seen and done. Information about how to get to some of the main tourist and Taekwondo sights has been saved on the gym’s computer (in English) for students by others who have already been.

Training
Training is held every weekday evening. This is the main training session of the day. These sessions are high-energy workouts, focusing on intensive footwork, kicks, and sparring. In the early afternoon there is an informal training session with master Chang, where students can work on their own individual problems or on things that they found difficult the previous evening.

Master Chang's unique style is evident in the more traditional aspects of his Taekwondo as well. In performing the Poomsae, the Sangrok style emphasizes the very same principles that rule its modern sides: executing power with minimum effort, fluidity of movement, and above all, the grace and beauty of Taekwondo. Working on the Poomsae is individual and each student practices his own level's Poomsae. Students who stay for longer periods of time very often choose to completely adopt to the Sangrok style, and in that vain, go back to basics and build their ability from there.

After the evening sessions the students usually play indoor soccer with Master Chang, thus improving their stamina and power even more, just before collapsing, exhausted, into their dinner chairs.

Getting To Korea
All flights go to Incheon airport. From there it is an hour by bus to the Gym. Email Master
Chang for directions and a note in Korean explaining where you need to go. This will be
sent as an email attachment. It is very easy to get to from the airport. The airport bus stops just a few meters from the academy. The bus driver will tell you when to get off if you show him the note.

The Meaning of Sangrok
'Sangrok' means “ever-green” as in the tree that is always growing and improving.
“Sangrok”

It represents a cycle of constant renewal and growth. Master Chang lives the Sangrok way which contains all the traditional beliefs of Taekwondo, such as respect and etiquette, combined with a belief that life is here to be enjoyed. The Sang Rok way of Taekwondo believes that promises must be kept and that all are welcome to learn Taekwondo the Sangrok way. The Sangrok way believes that Taekwondo will be with us through out our lives and that we should practice it accordingly. The Sangrok way of Taekwondo offers not only the combination of high-energy modern competitive training and traditional style taegeuk poomse, but also a chance to learn first-hand about living the Taekwondo way.

Sangrok World Taekwondo Academy is a very special place. It gives the unique opportunity to come to Korea and learn directly from Master Chang. The Sangrok academy is highly recommended by Kukkiwon for foreigners who want to live in Korea for Taekwondo training. Those who come to the academy find that not only do they train extremely hard, but also that they become quickly accepted into the Sangrok family. Students are provided the opportunity to experience Korean culture, way of life, and take trips that would otherwise be unavailable to other foreigners in Seoul.

Master Chang represents a lifetime of Taekwondo experience. He is extremely good at taking any student, beginner or instructor, to the next level of their Taekwondo. The Sangrok way of Taekwondo is Master Chang’s fluid, dynamic, and unified styles of Taekwondo. He has been developing and thinking about the best way to practice Taekwondo for over the past forty years, putting him in a position to answer any questions about why we do things the way we do in Taekwondo.

Master Chang understands well both the traditional style of Taekwondo and the modern styles. He has helped students who have learned the many varied styles of Taekwondo in the world today. Master Chang respects that students have learned differently and because he has been teaching foreigners for so long, he is very adept at showing them the next step in their Taekwondo.

The amount of time that students spend in Sangrok varies hugely. Some students come for periods of over a year, while others come for only a couple of days or few weeks. Many instructors come for a few weeks every year to learn new techniques as well! Taekwondo teams are also very welcome at Sangrok. Students looking to test at Kukkiwon must stay for over six months, as this is in accordance with WTF regulations.
